WHY SEE THE NEXT TO NORMAL?  To just once, step away from the saccharine sweet musicals they have seen over and over and experience the most incredibly written script of its time.  To face a little reality that we as human beings turn our heads to so many times.  To maybe understand a little better the lives of the individuals and their loved ones, who struggle mental illness every second of every day of their lives. To start conversations in their own homes, with their own loved ones and friends which I hope someday will make the subject of mental illness a little more palatable.

THAC PREVIEW: Next to Normal

Hello THAC Friends & Followers,

The next main stage production in THAC’s 2014 – 2015 Season will be Next to Normal (N2N), music by Tom Kitt, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey (interview below). Winner of the 2010 Pultzer Prize for drama, this contemporary rock-musical explores how one suburban household copes with love and crisis. With electrifying LIVE music and lyrics, N2N shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact. Ben Brantley of the New York Times n2n-webcalled it, “A brave, breathtaking new musical. It is something much more than a fee-good musical: it is a feel everything musical.”

N2N seems to be a critic favorite! Nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards, N2N took three for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance for a leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. As I mentioned previously, N2N also won the 2010 Pultzer Prize, becoming the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. Winner of the the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Outstanding Score and nomincated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actress (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Score, N2N is sure to please patrons of THAC.

Featured in this production is Margie Lamb, reprising her role as Diana after performing at the Aurora Fox for Ignite Theatre. Daniel Langhoff cast in the role of Dan, returns to Town Hall most recently seen as Daddy Warbucks in the 2013 production of Annie. Jacquie Jo Billings is also returning to THAC in the role of Natalie. You may remember her as Thea in last season’s performance of Spring Awakening. Making their THAC debuts, are Josh Bess as Gabriel, Ethan Knowels as Henry, and Jared Ming as Dr Madden/ Dr Fine. Understudying the roles of Gabriel and Henry is Carter Edward Smith; also seen in THAC’s productions of Spring Awakening, Music Man, and 9 to 5. Carter is scheduled for perform 2/26/2015 for the role of Henry and 3/5/2015 for the role of Gabriel.

N2N is directed by Nick Sugar, Henry Award winner for THAC’s 2012 production of The Who’s Tommy and 2010 production of RENT, and most recently seen directing and choreographing Anything Goes for Town Hall in 2014. Donna Debreceni (2012 Henry Award winner for Outstanding Musical Direction for The Who’s Tommy) returns as musical director leading a live band with keyboards onstage. Joining her onstage are Austin Hein (Bass), Kevin E. Johnson (Cello), David Paul (Violin), Scott Alan Smith (Guitars), and Tag Worley (Drums/ Percussion).

THAC’s production of Next to Normal open’s Friday 2/13 and runs through Sunday 3/15 (2015). We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a truly moving performance and rockin’ time at the theatre.

Be sure to check the Town Hall Arts Center Blog TOMORROW 2/10 for a special Q&A session with cast member Carter Edward Smith!
