THAC PREVIEW: Next to Normal

Hello THAC Friends & Followers,

The next main stage production in THAC’s 2014 – 2015 Season will be Next to Normal (N2N), music by Tom Kitt, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey (interview below). Winner of the 2010 Pultzer Prize for drama, this contemporary rock-musical explores how one suburban household copes with love and crisis. With electrifying LIVE music and lyrics, N2N shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact. Ben Brantley of the New York Times n2n-webcalled it, “A brave, breathtaking new musical. It is something much more than a fee-good musical: it is a feel everything musical.”

N2N seems to be a critic favorite! Nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards, N2N took three for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance for a leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. As I mentioned previously, N2N also won the 2010 Pultzer Prize, becoming the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. Winner of the the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Outstanding Score and nomincated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actress (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Score, N2N is sure to please patrons of THAC.

Featured in this production is Margie Lamb, reprising her role as Diana after performing at the Aurora Fox for Ignite Theatre. Daniel Langhoff cast in the role of Dan, returns to Town Hall most recently seen as Daddy Warbucks in the 2013 production of Annie. Jacquie Jo Billings is also returning to THAC in the role of Natalie. You may remember her as Thea in last season’s performance of Spring Awakening. Making their THAC debuts, are Josh Bess as Gabriel, Ethan Knowels as Henry, and Jared Ming as Dr Madden/ Dr Fine. Understudying the roles of Gabriel and Henry is Carter Edward Smith; also seen in THAC’s productions of Spring Awakening, Music Man, and 9 to 5. Carter is scheduled for perform 2/26/2015 for the role of Henry and 3/5/2015 for the role of Gabriel.

N2N is directed by Nick Sugar, Henry Award winner for THAC’s 2012 production of The Who’s Tommy and 2010 production of RENT, and most recently seen directing and choreographing Anything Goes for Town Hall in 2014. Donna Debreceni (2012 Henry Award winner for Outstanding Musical Direction for The Who’s Tommy) returns as musical director leading a live band with keyboards onstage. Joining her onstage are Austin Hein (Bass), Kevin E. Johnson (Cello), David Paul (Violin), Scott Alan Smith (Guitars), and Tag Worley (Drums/ Percussion).

THAC’s production of Next to Normal open’s Friday 2/13 and runs through Sunday 3/15 (2015). We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a truly moving performance and rockin’ time at the theatre.

Be sure to check the Town Hall Arts Center Blog TOMORROW 2/10 for a special Q&A session with cast member Carter Edward Smith!

THE FINAL DRESS REHERSAL

Grades 6 – 12

Directed by: Susan Rahmsdorff

Our most exciting production yet! One-half student created, one-half Noises Off! Our actors will create their unique characters and give them personality. Students build the first half of the show together as those characters hilariously audition for the school play. Then, in the second act, we go back to the script to see the disastrous results as the production falls apart around them! You think the theater is crazy from an audience perspective? Wait until you see the pandemonium back stage!

In an attempt to save their sanctuary, Percy, Grover, Annabeth, and Percy’s half-brother, Tyson, set off to find the mythical Golden Fleece that can heal any wound. Along the way, they’ll meet gods and monsters and an array of the most bizarre characters, all living unnoticed in our world! Can Percy accept the burdens of leadership and his family? Can you fight prophecy, even if you aren’t sure what it means? Who is going to get eaten and will that slow them down?

HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Grades: 5 – 7

Directed by: LuAnn Buckstein

Will Harry be kicked out of Hogwarts? It looks that way. The Ministry of Magic is calling Harry a liar and denying the return of Voldemort. On top of that, the new Defense Teacher, Dolores Umbridge, seems determined to make everything worse! In response to these threats, Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather, introduces him to “The Order of the Phoenix” – a clandestine group formed to fight the Death Eaters and Harry starts “Dumbledore’s Army” – a clandestine student group formed to fight the problems within the school itself. Can Harry, Ron, Hermione and their friends take on all these troubles and still pass their O.W.L exams?

ANSWER THIS…

THE BEST INVENTION IN HISTORY IS? The Printing Press.

WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS? See if you can switch up for a good Grapefruit or Pomegranate. They’re a lot more fun.

YOU’RE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND… WHAT TWO ITEMS DO YOU BRING? A good book and a warm coat (I’m sure whatever else you need you can find there)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ACTING? Started in Kindergarten with “The Three Little Pigs” (I played the Wolf).

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ROLE YOU’VE PLAYED? Molina in “Kiss of the Spider Woman”

WHAT’S YOUR DREAM ROLE TO BE CAST? There are so many… but maybe Marius in “Les Miserables” or Linus in “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.”

WHO IS YOUR HERO? BIGGEST INSPIRATION? Definitely my parents.  They’ve showed us the value of hard work at an early age and how important it is to have strong faith when everything seems helpless.

WHERE ARE YOU IN 10 YEARS? Who knows.  Life has taken me to some pretty cool places, but  I’d love to be back in California or overseas somewhere performing in shows.

CAN WE FOLLOW YOU? FB? TWITTER?  Twitter is fine. @gmorale83181014 (sorry didn’t know you could come up with with a cool name for it when I opened the account). LOL

WHY SEE ANYTHING GOES? It’s definitely a show for all the romantics at heart.  The notion of a handsome man pursuing a gorgeous girl the “old school way” definitely reminds us how much of that chivalry we have lost over the years due to technology advancing so fast.  I mean when a person gets asked out these days it’s via text.  Not even a phone call is made anymore. I think its super romantic that Billy goes through all that trouble to get the girl he loves.  Plus it’s Cole Porter’s music!  Enough said. =)
