Did you know it wasn’t the pea that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you’re in for a walloping surprise! Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Once Upon a Mattress is a critically-acclaimed musical comedy that opened on Broadway on May 11, 1959 and ran for 460 performances.

Once Upon a Mattress was originally written as a shorter play during an adult summer camp. The play was later expanded for the Broadway stage. Initial reviews of the play were mixed, but critics and actors alike were surprised by the show’s enduring popularity.

The Broadway production was directed by George Abbott and choreographed by Joe Layton. Once Upon A Mattress also marked the Broadway debut of stage and TV legend Carol Burnett, who founded the role of Princess Winnifred the Woebegone. The Broadway cast also starred Joseph Bova, Allen Case, Jack Gilford, Anne Jones, Matt Mattox, and Harry Snow. Actress Jane White played the role of Queen Aggravaine, becoming the first African-American woman to portray a white character on stage. The play was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Revival of a Musical, and Best Leading Actress (Carol Burnett). (Source: Peter Grierson’s Site)

Reviews

“Town Hall Arts Center has its season off to a live-wire start, under Robert Wells’ skilled direction. He really has a knack for staging the silly stuff. Kelly Kates’ choreography shines throughout — especially “The Spanish Panic.” Michael Duran’s scenic design suggests a castle’s architecture, with clever set pieces to add and subtract quickly. Music was recorded by Donna Debrecini. Costumes by Terri Fong are colorful and richly detailed. Lighting and sound are perfectly calibrated.” — Sonya Ellingboe, Littleton Independent

“We thoroughly enjoyed the show. In fact, we haven’t seen anything we haven’t liked. The whole cast was fabulous, but the female lead was phenomenal. Can’t wait for the next one.” –Karen (patron)

“We saw the show last Saturday and it was hilarious! The actress portraying “Fred” is outstanding!!” — Jan (patron)
