Jack Kelly and his newsboy pals dream of a better life than the hard streets of New York City, where they earn 26 cents a day for their grueling physical labor. Selling “papes” has been a challenge since the end of the Spanish-American War. When wealthy industrialists raise the price of paper bundles, cutting further into the Newsies’ meager profits, they decide to stand up for themselves; through song and dance, of course!
This uplifting stage musical is based on the movie of the same name and is a fictionalized account of the real newsboy strike of 1899.
