Why see HAIRSPRAY ?  The music, the dancing and singing!  But overall the story… the simple tale of loving each other no matter the size, shape, color or ANYTHING!  We can achieve harmony when we learn to appreciate each other in our similarities and differences.
HAIRSPRAY is set in 1962 Baltimore Maryland, what can this story teach us today?  The optimism that Tracy Turnblad and the Coolest and Nicest kids achieved is still far from being a reality.  It is sad that the same fears, phobias and misaligned stereotypes that kept our country apart 55 ago, are still alive all these years later.  But I remain hopeful that if we continue to tell these stories and create this art then we will continue to strive for harmony, and unity with each other.  It amazes me that after all the sit-ins, marches, protests, and voices crying out for change, how far we are from the dream of the civil rights Era in America.  Now, Baltimore is still in an uproar (i.e. Freddie Gray) and the entire country is embroiled in turmoil and strife on every level.  Maybe we can learn from seeing how we haven’t come as far as we thought.
